NewDrew Surf Lesson Revue Sunday 7/24/05
With my family in tow I met NewDrew at Law Street in PB today for a lesson. The surf was in the 2 to 3 feet range with some sneaker chest high sets which didn't always have the best form. We started on the outside and NewDrew worked on his paddling and the patented Jeff Hackert waiting game style for the infrequent sets that were provided for a while. After some time we worked on some inside surfing. Since the last lesson I noticed ND's (Not Napolean Dynamite) paddling has improved significantly. Wave selection and paddle speed has improved in the past few weeks also. And standing up pretty quickly overall has also improved. The areas to focus on would be practicing popping up at every opportunity you have, continue to practice paddling deep long strokes to gain momentum when paddling for the wave, and really watch other surfers and empty waves to see where you'd want to be on that wave.
Although the surf was crowded, I was yelled at by a female surfer for being in her way, and ND almost losing an eye and some limbs from people using him as a target for their spearnosed surfboards it was a pretty good learning day after all. I think we will probably try south PB or south Mission Beach next time around to avoid that squeezed in crowd between Tourmaline and Crystal Pier.
After the surf we all headed to Moondoggies for lunch...We went to a few surfshops, the first one being Bob's Mission Surf Shop. We checked out a Bear three stringer super wide noserider 9'6". After looking at several shops ND knew he head fallen in love with that board. I think it's a great call because the nose and tail width are really good for stability and it looks like an incredible noserider....NewDrew will be bringing that to Del Mar tomorrow for a surf so that will be cool to checkout......Until next time.....
